*Pythagorean winning percentage

1. New England Patriots: 72.4

The Bill Belichick logic of going for it on 4th down in blowouts is beginning to make more sense, but he is still running up the score (not that there is anything wrong with it).

2. Pittsburgh Steelers: 65.0

Is the fact that Peyton Manning has more touchdowns (3) than Willie Parker (2) disheartening to anyone else?

3. Indianapolis Colts: 63.6

Sometimes kickers don’t come back from games like Adam Vinatieri’s past two weeks, even when you have to go through the metal detector four times with those four rings of his.

4. Green Bay Packers: 62.0

Ryan Grant’s 4.3 yards per carry average gives Green Bay just enough of a running game to keep defenses honest.

5. Dallas Cowboys: 59.8

The margin of error for the Cowboys will be slim a week from Thursday against Green Bay because a loss means Lambeau in late January against one of the NFC’s most explosive defensive units.

6. Seattle Seahawks: 57.4

Over the past three games, Matt Hasselbeck has a 100.1 passer rating.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 56.4

The Buccaneers have the third-best pass defense in the NFL this season.

8. New York Giants: 54.1

Plaxico Burress is averaging 32 yards per game over the Giants’ last four.

9. Jacksonville Jaguars: 53.4

Reggie Williams may only have 322 yards, but he’s found the end zone five times this season.

10. Philadelphia Eagles: 52.4

The Eagles are better than their record, but their next five games (Patriots, Seahawks, Giants, Cowboys, Saints) are terribly brutal, healthy Donovan McNabb or not.

11. San Diego Chargers: 52.3

Shawne Merriman and LaDainian Tomlinson are growing increasingly restless, but they are still leaps and bounds better than anyone else in the AFC West.

12. Tennessee Titans: 51.6

Even without Albert Haynesworth, the Titans face the Bengals and Texans, which are two very winnable games.

13. Arizona Cardinals: 50.1

Kurt Warner has a rating of 108.4 and 104.9 in the Cardinals’ past two games, both wins.

14. Detroit Lions: 49.9

Are the Lions not using Calvin Johnson enough?

15. Cleveland Browns: 49.5

Reflecting on that Phil Dawson field goal, the Browns would be 7-3 had Tommy Kelly of the Raiders not blocked a game-winning field goal back on September 23rd.

16. Houston Texans: 48.9

Andre Johnson is averaging 127 yards per game so imagine where the Texans would be had he not missed seven in a row.

17. Minnesota Vikings: 48.1

Chester Taylor rushed for 164 yards on Sunday versus Oakland, making the loss of Adrian Peterson less devastating than originally believed.

18. Washington Redskins: 47.5

Jason Campbell threw the ball 54 times at Dallas on Sunday, a major departure for a Joe Gibbs’ quarterback.

19. New Orleans Saints: 46.3

Reggie Bush has been doing the majority of his damage as a receiver, begging the question of how much more effective he would be if Deuce McAllister were healthy.

20. Cincinnati Bengals: 46.2

An offseason Chad Johnson trade is looking like a better idea now that the Bengals are 3-7.

21. Chicago Bears: 45.9

The Bears are giving up six more points per game this season.

22. Oakland Raiders: 44.7

The Raiders are better than their 2-8 record suggests, and with a difficult remaining schedule, they may end up being better than their 2-14 season-ending record suggests as well.

23. Baltimore Ravens: 44.3

The absence of Todd Heap hasn’t helped the Ravens’ passing game.

24. Carolina Panthers: 44.1

Has the Bill Cowher countdown officially begun?

25. Kansas City Chiefs: 43.8

Brodie Croyle had a 99.2 rating in the Chiefs’ 13-10 loss at Indianapolis.

26. New York Jets: 42.2

The Jets are 2-1 when Thomas Jones rushes for over 100 yards, but the free agent acquisition still hasn’t scored a touchdown.

27. Denver Broncos: 42.0

The Broncos have stayed in the hunt so if Travis Henry avoids suspension and Javon Walker can get healthy, they could sneak into the playoffs.

28. Buffalo Bills: 40.8

I’m not sure J.P. Losman is the Bills’ quarterback of the future or even next season, but he is still the preferred choice over Trent Edwards.

29. Miami Dolphins: 40.0

Ted Ginn’s 87-yard punt return was a promising sign, but even more so were his four catches for 52 yards, a career day.

30. Atlanta Falcons: 36.7

Only the 49ers have scored fewer points this season.

31. St. Louis Rams: 36.7

Lost in the shuffle of a bad overall season is the fact that Jeff Wikins has his lowest percentage since 2002.

32. San Francisco 49ers: 33.6

Taking away their flukish two wins to begin the season, the 49ers would have a 28.8 Pythagorean winning percentage. The 2004 team, which finished 2-14 behind Tim Rattay and Ken Dorsey, was even better with a 36.4 percentage. The Patriots are nearly certain to be getting the first overall pick.
