- When Johnny Unitas passed away, Peyton Manning wanted to pay tribute to the former Colts’ quarterback by wearing black hightops, but the NFL denied his request.

Now the NFL has told 49ers head coach Mike Nolan that he will not be allowed to wear a suit in the tradition of his father, former 49ers head coach Dick Nolan.

Wearing a suit on the sidelines give the NFL a dignity that is often missing from the game.

- Tom Brady’s contract extension is much deserved, though it is unlikely that he would excel with any other team as he has during his many seasons in New England. Bill Belichek is the only person associated with the success of the Patriots that could not be replaced, but nevertheless having consistent play at quarterback makes Bilichek’s job that much easier.

He’s making less than Peyton Manning and he shouldn’t. Just because he has more rings than any other current quarterback in the NFL doesn’t mean that he should make more than any other quarterback.

- Other than the stretch that the Patriots and Eagles have enjoyed over the last four or five years, the NFL has been a league of parity and now that parity has spread to the NBA.

Salary cap’s in both sports have made it increasingly difficult for a team to maintain their dominance.

In this new version of the NFL, it makes the Patriots title run of three Super Bowls over four years, unquestionably the best in NFL history.

- The news coming out of Anaheim that they are working to get a team back to the Los Angeles area is great for the NFL. It is hard to believe that is has already been 10 years since L.A. last saw football.

- Kellen Winslow, Jr. gave athletes all over the world another reminder about the stupidity of riding motorcycles. If you are an athlete, your body is your business and there is no reason to risk your livelihood.

Ben Roethlisberger, on the other hand, is thoroughly committed to his hog.

Jay Williams of the Bulls is battling a very uphill battle right now to get back to the floor.
