The Answers
1. What was the best thing(s) that happened in 2007?
JayDubya: I think the best thing that happened for the franchise overall was the release of Byron Leftwich, which gave David Garrard the chance to shine.
sp1187: Watching Garrard finally get his chance. I saw glimpses of greatness early on right after he left E.C.U. and my instincts were correct. This guy is serious!
2. What was the worst thing that happened in 2007?
JayDubya: The worst thing in my mind was the loss to New England in the playoffs, because we had a real good shot and only lost it towards the end.
sp1187: Losing to the Colts again. We can never seem to get over them, and until we do we will not be considered an elite team by the media, that’s just the way it is
3. Who had a breakout season?
JayDubya: Two guys had fairly noticeable breakout years, Garrard and Reggie Williams.
sp1187: Garrard, obviously and Justin Durant. Durant showed me that he could produce as a rookie when I had doubts.
4. Who was the biggest disappointment?
JayDubya: Matt Jones. So much talent, but so little production.
sp1187: Jones. His attitude and work ethic disgusts me as a fan. I'm sure he tries, but it just seems like he doesn’t care.
5. How could the team have been more successful?
JayDubya: A decent pass rush would help this team tremendously. You want to win? You’ve got to get pressure on Tom Brady and Peyton Manning.
sp1187: Better pass rush, for sure. We can play great, but it is when we need a big stop or turnover in the clutch to stop an offensive surge that we struggle. And we can’t let Brady or other quarterbacks play us like a video game. Inexcusable.
6. What do you make of the team’s offseason progress at this point?
JayDubya: So far, I like what the Jags have done. Jerry Porter should really help Garrard by finally giving him a deep threat, and the signing of Drayton Florence gives us more depth at corner and more versatility in the entire secondary.
sp1187: I love it. Porter is the wide receiver we have needed since Jimmy Smith retired and I feel he will be a true number one. I have high hopes for Florence, but I hope he’s worth the money. Cleo Lemon is a decent quarterback, but we paid too much for a backup.
7. Where are the team’s biggest needs in the draft?
JayDubya: Our most important need is easily defensive end. Safety and offensive tackle are also holes that I could see being filled this weekend.
sp1187: A wide receiver that can double as a punt/kick returner.
8. Who do you hope the team drafts with their first pick?
JayDubya: Ideally, I would love to get Derrick Harvey, but more realistic picks may be Philip Merling or Calais Campbell.
sp1187: Campbell from the University of Miami.
9. Which player will be on the hot seat in 2008?
JayDubya: The person that jumps out in my mind is Jones, but that is if he is even here at the start of the season.
sp1187: Jones and maybe Mercedes Lewis if his production drops off, but he’s still young and should improve.
10. What are the realistic expectations for 2008 at this point?
JayDubya: Realistically, playoffs for sure and I fully expect them to be able to compete for a division title and Super Bowl.
sp1187: 13-3. AFC South Title. Period. We are that good.
