Keyboard QB: Week Ten
Authored by Andrew Perna - 14th November, 2006 - 1:46 am
While there isn't a real marquee matchup, Ravens vs. Colts, Panthers vs. Bucs, Bears vs. Falcons, and Chargers vs. Patriots are all pivotal games in the standings.
With John Herrera standing to his right dressed in black and appearing not unlike an undertaker, Lane Kiffin sat down at the podium for Sunday's postgame news conference.
Baltimore wants Flacco to be their QB of the future. But the Ravens feel they have no choice but to start him now because Boller and Smith are unavailable. Wrong!

After a weekend of intense football, with eleven games decided by a touchdown or less, I’m hungry for more. Unfortunately I’ll have to settle by reminiscing about the many wonders that occurred in week ten. Of course, that shouldn’t be too hard considering I tend to do this on a weekly basis.
And of course I’ll dish on my fantasy adventures as well. Remember the fantasy football playoffs are just a few weeks away!
Week Eleven Highs Jets Top Pats The Jets topped the high-powered Pats with a 17-14 victory in a rain-soaked Gillette Stadium. New York held New England to one touchdown, while scoring two of their own in the second and fourth quarters. The loss was the Pats second in as many weeks, and pulled the Jets to within a game of New England in the AFC East.
Bills Keep Up With Colts They may have lost, but the Buffalo Bills put up one heck of a fight against the undefeated Colts in Indianapolis on Sunday. J.P. Losman may not have been overly effective, but he protected the ball against the Colts. And he very nearly drove the Bills to victory in the final minutes.
Ravens Fly High After trailing by as many as nineteen points, Baltimore stormed back for a 27-26 victory over the Titans. The win improved the Ravens to 7-2, and gave them a three game lead over the struggling Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC North.
Seahawks Soar over Rams For the second time this season Seattle earned a victory over division-rival St. Louis on a Josh Brown field-goal in the final seconds. The Seahawks have now won two straight with Seneca Wallace behind center and Maurice Morris in the backfield. The NFC West seems to be Seattle’s for the taking.
Chargers Out-Shoot the Bengals San Diego beat Cincinnati 49-41, with Philip Rivers and LaDainian Tomlinson combining for seven touchdowns in Paul Brown Stadium. Tomlinson tied his own team-record with four scores on the ground, and Chad Johnson aka ‘Ocho Cinco’ caught eleven balls for 260 yards and two scores in the losing effort.
Week Eleven Lows Chiefs Fall to Dolphins After winning three straight games on the arm of back-up quarterback Damon Huard, the Chiefs struggled offensively against the meager Dolphins. They very nearly stormed back with ten unanswered points in the fourth quarter, but they simply ran out of time. They’ll look to rebound against Oakland on Sunday.
Cardinals Lose Eighth Straight After winning their first game of the season and becoming a ‘sexy’ pick for the NFC playoffs, Arizona has lost eight straight games with Kurt Warner and Matt Leinart splitting the losses. The Cardinals are having trouble on both sides of the ball, and with three division games left – they look like a lock for the league’s top draft pick.
Falcons Grounded Again After soaring to a 5-2 record through their first seven games, the Falcons have lost consecutive games against inferior competition (Cleveland and Detroit). Mike Vick looked mortal compared to recent weeks, completing just sixteen of his forty passing attempts for 197 yards and two interceptions.
Vikings Stumble Beginning the season with a 4-2 record, Minnesota has dropped three straight games and has nearly fallen out of contention in the NFC North. At 4-5 the Vikings will find it hard to qualify for the postseason with the Bears in their division and the wild card spots being hotly contested.
Bears Maul Giants In a battle for the NFC’s top seed, Chicago dismantled New York in the second half en route to a 38-20 victory. Rex Grossman reversed his recent fortunes with a three touchdown performance against a battered Giant defense. The loss drops New York to 6-3, just a game ahead of Philadelphia and Dallas in the competitive NFC East.
My Fantasy Diary… The central theme of my fantasy adventures this season seems to be the Monday Night game. With my army of nine teams it’s not hard to believe that every week I’d have a win or loss hanging in the balance as the NFL goes prime time. Heading into the Panthers-Bucs match last night I was riding a two-game MNF win streak.
Last week I needed a helluva game from Deion Branch and got just that and a two-point win in my Nichols College league. The week prior I needed a seemingly impossible sixteen points from Anquan Boldin, who was going against the iron-clad Bears defense. Again Boldin did the job, and again it earned me a win in the Nichols College league.
Heading in week ten I was 4-5 in the aforementioned Nichols league, and in dire need of a win against Trojan Man, who stood between my Italian Stallions and a playoff spot. With the Sunday games over I was thirteen points behind America’s #1 condom manufacturer, with Cadillac Williams still poised in my backfield. Of course, had I played Dallas quarterback Tony Romo over Marc Bulger all would have been settled, but that’s another story.
You all know what happened on MNF. Cadillac stalled for a weak forty-four yards and four fantasy points. I ended up losing by nine points, and my playoff hopes in the Nichols College league are now fading. That put my combined week ten record at 4-5, with wins in the RealGM Writers’ League, The Pacer Fans League, the East Coast Pigskin League (I know!), and a FOX Public League.
Heading into week eleven I think I’m going to make the playoffs in five of my nine leagues, and if I’m lucky maybe six. That’s not half bad. It’s over a fifty percent success rate, but what really matters is how deep I go into the playoffs. I want a trophy, even if I have to buy it for myself…
