Sunday was the feature day in Indy, with the offensive skill position players doing their workouts. It was also an informative day on the impending free agent period, and I believe I found some clarity for the next mock draft (look for it Wednesday!). Free Agent/Player Movement Notes --The Bills are the clubhouse leader in the Fred Taylor sweepstakes, if you can call it that. The level of interest in Taylor is minor. Buffalo is looking for an insurance policy on Marshawn Lynch, whom they expect to lose for at least 2 games to suspension for his recent gun issues. --Cleveland will be a free agent player once again, though not as heavily as in the past few years. Their priority target is RB Derrick Ward, perhaps the least-hyped 1,000 rusher in NFL history. They are also working hard to keep safety Sean Jones in Cleveland. Mike Furrey is on their radar as well. --The Raiders continue to make moves that rectify their recent ineptitude. They released safety Gibril Wilson one year into a ridiculously overpriced (thanks to Wilson?s Super Bowl inflation) deal. They are also working on the financial specifics of releasing WR Javon Walker, perhaps the biggest free agent bust of all time. It?s a complex scenario, but look for the Raiders to swing the axe before Walker?s $5M roster bonus is due late next week. As far as who they are looking to sign, Chris Kemoeatu and Reggie Williams appear to be the biggest names. As for Wilson, don?t discount a return to the Giants, though the Falcons and Texans will be players. --Don?t look for any big splashes from the Lions. They are clearly looking for a deep-threat WR to counter Calvin Johnson, and Devery Henderson and Bryant Johnson are the leading candidates. Their reaction to the Jets release of TE Chris Baker indicates strong interest there as well. You can forget the Matt Cassel or Albert Haynesworth rumors, though the Mike Peterson talk appears to have legit legs. Detroit is also the only team I?ve heard even mentioned in connection with Rex Grossman. --Darren Sharper to the Saints just might be the first announced free agent deal. The Vikings have no interest in bringing him back. They are thisclose to a deal with C Matt Birk, keeping the veteran glue to their OL in Minnesota. --Marvin Harrison and Philadelphia are doing the courtship dance. To me, the more intriguing about-to-be-ex-Colt is center Jeff Saturday. If he?s healthy he is still an upper-echelon center. I have not heard anything on where he might wind up, but I have to think the Dolphins would have strong interest. Draft stuff --the RB class was unanimously disappointed with their 40 times. The best time was 4.46 from Cedric Peerman, the first time in years no back has broken the 4.4 mark. Agents are already talking about a slow clock, though it didn?t seem to impact the wide receivers near as much. This development has to please Devin Moore of Wyoming, who wasn?t invited to participate in the Combine but held a private workout here last week. He ran a legit 4.43. --the two premier RBs, Beanie Wells of Ohio State and Knowshon Moreno of Georgia, clocked in at 4.59 and 4.68 respectively. That sort of nullifies the negative impact in terms of ?Quienes Mas Macho?? but it lends credence to my increasingly popular theory that no RBs come off the board before the 21st pick, with potential that there are zero RBs taken in the first round. --Two RBs who really helped themselves in workouts: Andre Brown of NC State and the aforementioned Peerman. Brown is a bruiser between the tackles, but his 4.49 40 time showed he?s got legit speed too. The Wolfpack were a completely different team when he was on the field, a fact that has not gone unnoticed in scouting circles. He might have run his way into the third round, though his lengthy injury list is an issue. Peerman followed up a solid week in Mobile (save a bad fumble in the actual game) by finishing in the top 5 of pretty much every drill here. He is a bright kid who comes across well in interviews, so that helps his stock as well. --big winner of Sunday was Maryland WR Darius Heyward-Bey, who clocked the best 40 time of the Combine thus far at 4.30. At his size (he?s 6?2?, 210), that 40 time is jaw-dropping. His Terps career was up and down, but DHB?s potential has always been sky-high. It just got higher, and DHB solidified himself as a 1st round pick. --Jeremy Maclin tripped and took a bad fall during a route drill, which drew audible gasps. He gingerly continued working out but clearly wasn?t 100%. He earns kudos for fighting through it, but the biggest knock on Maclin is his route running ability and tripping over his own feet doesn?t exactly quell that argument. Michael Crabtree can breathe a little easier if he was worried about Maclin passing him as the first WR taken. Both appear to be solidly in the top 10 overall picks. --Arizona WR Mike Thomas showed great speed and impressive athleticism, as expected. But he?s still just 5?8?, which makes teams wary. Still, he was highly productive with a hit-and-miss QB in college and proved he could get open and make catches in Mobile. --Rutgers WR Tiquan Underwood was the other big workout wonder of Sunday. A disappointing underachiever in 2008, Underwood?s impressive performance here probably moved him into the 5th-6th round range. Heading into 2008, Underwood was fairly well-regarded by scouts and his size/speed package is impressive. Chalk him up as a sleeper worth watching, my condemnation of his value in my WR Big Board be damned. --Mark Sanchez impressed with his compact delivery and sharpness of his throws. He is now at least equal with Matt Stafford; certain teams favor one over the other, but that?s more an indictment of coaching preference than skill. On that front, the Lions clearly prefer Stafford over Sanchez if they pull the trigger at #1 overall (more on that in a minute). The Chiefs at #3 prefer Sanchez, and my sources tell me the Niners feel the same way if they choose to go QB at #10. Neither team is locked in to drafting a QB, however. This presents a potential nightmare scenario for Stafford. It seems less likely every day that the Lions take him at #1 overall, for a variety of reasons. If he?s not an option for KC or SF, the next team with presumed interest in a first-round QB is the Jets at #17, but they appear to favor Sanchez as well. On the unlikely but plausible scenario that the Lions, Chiefs, and 49ers all pass on QBs, Stafford could fall to Detroit at #20. That is a huge financial hit--ask Brady Quinn and Aaron Rodgers. I sense that some team would put together a trade and keep that from happening, but ask yourself this: would you rather deal to move up and take an unproven rookie in Stafford or spend the same picks and go get Matt Cassel?
