The NFL is in their most profound Jekyll and Hyde season in its history. No team is undefeated and only the 49ers, Panthers and Bills are without a win. The entire AFC South has a 3-2 record and only eight teams have lost just once. The Trench Counter doesn't take into account special teams play and as embarrassing as San Diego has been on special teams, their futility reflects poorly on the TC. The Chargers would almost certainly be 5-0 if they had even a mediocre special teams unit, but they are 2-3 despite emphatically controlling the line of scrimmage in losses to both the Chiefs and Raiders, and the loss at Seattle could be called a push in that department at worse. The Trench Counter formula creates a completely objective examination. The true intention of this type of ranking system is to identify teams that may be over or underrated. 1.
