May 13, 2024 8:30 AM

The New England Patriots have announced Eliot Wolf as their executive vice president of player personnel.

He will be in charge of the direction of the personnel department, salary cap management and control of the 53-man roster.

Wolf, 42, previously served as the director of scouting for the Patriots, but did appear to serve as New England's general manager throughout the draft process.

Wolf's title is not "general manager," but his role does include those duties.

QB Drake Maye 'Has A Lot To Work On' Says Coach

May 12, 2024 1:32 PM

First-year New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo might not be as hard-lined as Bill Belichick when answering questions from reporters, but he delivered a Belichick-type response when asked his first impressions of quarterback Drake Maye at rookie minicamp.

"He has a lot to work on. A lot to work on," Mayo said Saturday, repeating himself. "But I have no doubt that he will put the time in. He was here all night trying to get on the same page as everyone else."

Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft Had Tense Meeting Before Tom Brady Roast

May 10, 2024 9:56 AM

Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft had a tense meeting before Sunday's live roast of Tom Brady.

Julian Edelman and Drew Bledsoe discussed the three-hour roast during the latest episode of Edelman's "Games with Names" podcast and described the scene in the green room before the event.

Edelman and Bledsoe were both in the green room with Belichick, along with Rob Gronkowski and Randy Moss, when Kraft arrived.

"Then Kraft walks in ... Belichick's kind of holding court," Bledsoe recalled. "As he's in the middle of the story, Kraft walks in, and so you guys all go over to say hi to Kraft."

"The tension in that room, though, could cut f---ing glass," Edelman said.

Bledsoe added that Belichick and Kraft did at one point "break it down and got together for, I don't know, 10 minutes at least." But the former New England Patriots quarterback agreed with Edelman's assessment about the tension in the room, saying "it was very real, it was very real."

Eagles Executive Brandon Hunt Interviewing For Patriots' Job

May 8, 2024 8:43 AM

Philadelphia Eagles director of scouting Brandon Hunt interviewed Tuesday for the New England Patriots' lead personnel job, according to a report.

Three other candidates declined to interview with the Patriots -- Buffalo Bills director of player personnel Terrance Gray, former Arizona Cardinals vice president of player personnel Quentin Harris and Cincinnati Bengals senior personnel executive Trey Brown.

Patriots director of scouting Eliot Wolf has served as the de facto General Manager since Bill Belichick's departure earlier this offseason, and his expected candidacy for the job could explain the interview rejections.

Jacoby Brissett Eager To Battle Drake Maye For Patriots' QB1 Job

May 2, 2024 9:07 AM

Jacoby Brissett is eager to battle first-round pick Drake Maye for the starting quarterback job with the New England Patriots.

"That's all out of my control, so I don't really worry about that. I'm excited to have him on the team, and the other guys as well that we drafted and picked up. I think it's going to be good," Brissett said.

"Competition brings out the best in all of us, so I'm excited about that part."

Jerod Mayo has said that part of the reason the Patriots signed Brissett, 31, was to serve as a mentor, while also acknowledging that Brissett has started 48 career NFL games and is viewed by the coaching staff as worthy of the role.

Mayo added that the team's plan is to let competition determine who ultimately starts Week 1.

Chargers Received Trade Calls On Justin Herbert From Pats, Vikings

Apr 26, 2024 12:20 AM

The Los Angeles Chargers received trade inquiries on Justin Herbert from the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings.

Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz confirmed Thursday that he fielded inquiries about Herbert but did not specify which teams contacted him, adding "they were quickly shot down."

"Justin who?" Hortiz said with a smile. "No. No, at the combine I had some people ask me would we consider it, and they were quickly shot down. No, that is never an option."

The Chargers would have had to take on a $63.5 million salary cap charge for 2024 if they traded Herbert. The Chargers signed Herbert last July to a five-year, $262.5 million extension that included $133.7 million in full guarantees and $193.7 million in injury guarantees.

New England selected Drake Maye at No. 3, while the Vikings picked J.J. McCarthy at No. 10.

Patriots Open To Trading Out Of No. 3

Apr 18, 2024 1:23 PM

The New England Patriots are open to trading the No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL draft, but are also comfortable keeping the selection for a quarterback.

Eliot Wolf described trade discussions with other teams as "ongoing" while adding: "We have some holes we feel like we need to fill in the draft. We're a draft-and-develop team; the more picks we have, the better."

The Patriots enter next week's draft with eight total selections, headlined by the No. 3 pick and selections at the top of the second (No. 34) and third (68) rounds.

Caleb Williams is expected to go No. 1 to the Chicago Bears, while the Washington Commanders are widely expected to pick Jayden Daniels at No. 2. The Patriots could consider Drake Maye, J.J. McCarthy or Michael Penix Jr. at No. 3.
