Eagles Trade Up To Select Cooper DeJean

Apr 26, 2024 9:13 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles moved up in the second round to select Iowa defensive back Cooper DeJean.

The Eagles traded both of their second-round picks - Nos. 50 and 53 - along with a fifth-round pick to the Washington Commanders for picks 40 and 78.

DeJean was a projected first round pick, but was still available at No. 40.

DeJean totaled seven interceptions and 13 passes defensed over the past two seasons for Iowa while also making an impact as a punt returner.

Chargers Received Trade Calls On Justin Herbert From Pats, Vikings

Apr 26, 2024 12:20 AM

The Los Angeles Chargers received trade inquiries on Justin Herbert from the New England Patriots and Minnesota Vikings.

Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz confirmed Thursday that he fielded inquiries about Herbert but did not specify which teams contacted him, adding "they were quickly shot down."

"Justin who?" Hortiz said with a smile. "No. No, at the combine I had some people ask me would we consider it, and they were quickly shot down. No, that is never an option."

The Chargers would have had to take on a $63.5 million salary cap charge for 2024 if they traded Herbert. The Chargers signed Herbert last July to a five-year, $262.5 million extension that included $133.7 million in full guarantees and $193.7 million in injury guarantees.

New England selected Drake Maye at No. 3, while the Vikings picked J.J. McCarthy at No. 10.

Kirk Cousins Frustrated, Confused By Falcons Drafting Michael Penix

Apr 26, 2024 12:12 AM

Kirk Cousins was amongst the observers stunned by the decision by the Atlanta Falcons to spend a first round pick on quarterback Michael Penix Jr. out of Washington.

The Falcons made the pick despite signing Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract last month in free agency.

Cousins' agent, Mike McCartney, told ESPN's Pete Thamel that the Falcons only notified the QB that they'd pick Penix while the team was on the clock. McCartney said there is frustration and confusion coming from Cousins' camp because Atlanta did not use its first-round pick to make the team better in 2024.

Penix, himself, said he was surprised when he got the call telling him he was the pick.

"I'm not going to say I knew it was coming," Penix said. "But I knew once the phone call came through."

Patriots Open To Trading Out Of No. 3

Apr 18, 2024 1:23 PM

The New England Patriots are open to trading the No. 3 pick in the 2024 NFL draft, but are also comfortable keeping the selection for a quarterback.

Eliot Wolf described trade discussions with other teams as "ongoing" while adding: "We have some holes we feel like we need to fill in the draft. We're a draft-and-develop team; the more picks we have, the better."

The Patriots enter next week's draft with eight total selections, headlined by the No. 3 pick and selections at the top of the second (No. 34) and third (68) rounds.

Caleb Williams is expected to go No. 1 to the Chicago Bears, while the Washington Commanders are widely expected to pick Jayden Daniels at No. 2. The Patriots could consider Drake Maye, J.J. McCarthy or Michael Penix Jr. at No. 3.

QBs On Rookie Contracts Has Vastly Changed How Teams Approach Draft

Apr 4, 2024 1:47 PM

When the NFL changed its collective bargaining agreement in 2011 to give first round picks a contract slot based on when they were selected, drafting quarterbacks became a more valuable proposition.

From 1993 to 2010, teams used an average of 8.5 percent of their overall capital in a typical draft by the Jimmy Johnson chart on quarterbacks. Since 2011, that mark has risen to 10.9 percent, a jump of more than 28 percent.

If the New England Patriots select a quarterback at No. 3, they will automatically sign that player to a four-year, $35.8 million deal, or just under $9 million per year.

With the veteran average annual value at quarterback at $46.36 million, the required hit rate of drafting that quarterback at No. 3 would only need to be at 19.3 percent. If the Patriots believe Drake Maye has a 20 percent chance of turning into an NFL-caliber starting quarterback, they would be justified taking him with their pick.

The next positions on the list are edge rusher and wide receiver, which would require a 40.4 percent and 41.8 percent hit rate, respectively.

Linebacker, running back and center would each require a hit rate of more than 80 percent.

Bears Want To Move 'As Quickly As Possible' On Justin Fields' Decision

Feb 27, 2024 1:41 PM

The Chicago Bears hope to move "as quickly as possible" on whether they will draft a quarterback or go in another direction while keeping Justin Fields.

The Bears own the No. 1 pick in the draft for the second straight season. Last year, the Bears traded the pick to the Carolina Panthers, which led to the No. 1 pick this year.

"It just depends on what opportunities pop up," GM Ryan Poles said. "I will say this, I think you guys know me well enough now, if we go down that road, I want to do right by Justin as well. No one wants to live in gray, I know that's uncomfortable. I wouldn't want to be in that situation either. So, we will gather the information -- we will move as quickly as possible, [but] we are not going to be in a rush -- and see what presents itself and what's best for the organization."

Caleb Williams is widely considered the presumptive No. 1 pick in the draft.
